The City of Yokohama Frankfurt Representative office supported the Shinyokohama Raumen Museum, a unique theme park dedicated to Japanese "ramen" noodles, on their visit to Europe last November. The team from Shinyokohama Raumen Museum researched and filmed a documentary about ramen in France and Germany. The Representative Office supported the team with coordination, interpreting and general assistance.

4 – 9 June 2013 - Cooperation between Yokohama's Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia and Frankfurt's Nippon Connection Japanese Film Festival

The Japanese film festival "Nippon Connection", which is being held for the 13th time in Frankfurt, picks up on the city partnership between Frankfurt and Yokohama, and will show films related to Yokohama on three special evenings. A new cooperation between Nippon Connection and Yokohama's Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, which was arranged by the City of Yokohama Frankfurt Representative Office, made it possible to invite two directors and one professor of film studies to come to Frankfurt.

The first Yokohama-related film to be shown is "Utopia Sounds" by director Akihiro Mima, graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School for Film and New Media, which is located in Yokohama. This cooperation has been going on for a few years. The director will be present.

The second special evening is dedicated to short films, in cooperation with Yokohama's famous Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia. Six short films will be shown, among them award-winning ones. Director Ben Suzuki, whose award-winning film "A Day in the Life of Beijing Hutong" will be shown, will be present and give remarks.

Finally, a third special evening will focus on animation films. Professor Akiko Okamoto, head of the Animation section at the Graduate School for Film and New Media, will give a talk and introduce animated films.
The City of Yokohama Frankfurt Representative Office also supports the cultural program of Nippon Connection. Ms. Maria Deutsch, in charge of City Promotion at the Representative Office, will hold a workshop about kimono and yukata.

4 - 9 June 2013 - Cooperation between Yokohama's Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia and Frankfurt's Nippon Connection Japanese Film Festival

The Japanese film festival Nippon Connection, which was held for the 13th time in Frankfurt, picked up on the city partnership between Frankfurt and Yokohama, and showed films related to Yokohama on three special evenings.

The City of Frankfurt invited the guests from Yokohama for a small reception.

Professor Mitsuko Okamoto from the Tokyo University of Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media introduced a number of animated short films made by her students. The films were very well received by the audience.

 

The Representative Office had an information booth, which was well frequented.

 

During a special screening dedicated to short films, six short films, including award-winning ones, were shown in cooperation with Yokohama's famous Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia. The president of Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, Mr. Tetsuya Bessho, could not be present at Nippon Connection, but greeted the audience with a video message.

 

Short film director Ben Suzuki, whose award-winning work "A Day in the Life of Beijing Hutong" was be shown, answered questions from the audience about his film.

 

On the last day of the festival, the Representative Office offered a kimono workshop in order to promote the Japanese culture. The workshop was sold out, and most of the participants got to try on yukata (Japan's traditional summer clothes).

19 - 21 June 2013 - Yokohama attends UN High Level Dialogue on Implementing Rio+20 Decisions on Sustainable Cities and Urban Transport and wins "Global Green City Award"

 

The Berlin High Level Dialogue on Implementing Rio+20 Decisions on Sustainable Cities and Urban Transport took place in Berlin, Germany, from 19 until 21 June 2013. Jointly organized by the Centre for Innovation in Mobility and Societal Change (InnoZ) GmbH, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the Global Forum on Human SettlementsInternational Cities for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), the German Federal Environment Agency and other organizations, the conference brought together participants from all over the world to share best practices and exchange ideas.

 

 

Chief Representative Naoki Mimuro gave two presentations about electromobility in Yokohama and about the grand scale of Yokohama's policies for sustainable development.

Yokohama was awarded the Global Green City Award for its outstanding efforts to create a sustainable, green and livable city together with its citizens. Unfortunately Mayor Fumiko Hayashi was unable to attend, therefore Chief Representative Naoki Mimuro accepted the award on her behalf. The Shinyokohama Raumen Museum published a new episode of their documentary about Japanese ramen in Europe. This time the team explored the ramen scene in London, UK.

When Yokohama and Frankfurt signed a partnership agreement in 2011, citizens of both cities founded citizen exchange groups, the Yokohama Frankfurt Friendship Committee in Yokohama, and the Frankfurt-Yokohama Citizens Network in Frankfurt. At the initiative of these two groups, an apple tree planting project was launched, to promote the friendship between the citizens of Yokohama and Frankfurt while contributing to the protection of the natural environment.

 

A total of 16 trees were planted on 9 November 2013 in Frankfurt, with the contribution of both city councils, city governments and companies from Yokohama and Frankfurt such as JFE Engineering, a Yokohama company whose Europe headquarters are located in Frankfurt, and Continental Teves AG & Co. oHG, a Frankfurt company whose Japanese headquarters have been in Yokohama for many years.
